BALKAN REGIONAL PLAYWRIGHTS CONTEST
CHILDREN’S DRAMA 2017
PLAY IMPRESSIONS
As we entered into the Playwright Contest season for 2017, I personally couldn’t wait to embark upon the journey that I knew each playwright would take us on. Being a part of the blind jury for a second time, I was once again in awe of the work that the playwrights unveiled.
What further amazed me was how stimulating each play was. One could tell that each play drew inspiration from a deeper place, be it stories that have been told or real life experiences. Each was adapted well into its own original domain. A common thread that I noticed this year was humour. Regardless of the specific genre of a play, each playwright inserted enough laughs to break any tension that may have existed. The plays were relatable, creative and detail oriented and included visual descriptions that painted a clear picture of every costume and setting, transporting us into different realms altogether.
A certain level of professionalism was once again demonstrated as the wildly diverse characters ‘narrated’ the stories, proving yet again the playwrights’ proficiency in stage development.
It would be hard for any audience not to be fully captivated seeing these plays live.
The Jury would like to thank all the 2017 playwrights for their participation and well-written plays.
Well done to Daniela Kouzmanova (‘Christmas Story with Wally and Pauly’), Greg Lam (‘The Dowry of Princess Talia’), Maria Petrova-Eneva (‘How A Star is Born’) and Matthew Weaver (‘When You Are A Little Bit Older’) for being shortlisted.
Second prize goes to Paul Vintner for ‘Second Star to the Right’.
First prize goes to Lilyana Baylova for ‘Stars Master’s Nephews’.
Congratulations once again to all the playwrights!
We wish you all success as you continue
to invite audiences around the world
to join you in realizing your dreams
on this journey of imagination.

MILE MOTHIBE
‘I’ve known of the International Playwrights Contest from its inception and have been privy to the type of work that is generally produced- though not specifically the plays. As a first time member of the blind jury, I was given a completely different perspective of the contest. I was in awe of the work that the playwrights presented, to say the least.’

ugliness of what happened before.
The short film, “Oracle” is a production of the International Talent Club Canada, ITC ARTTOS, Bulgaria and Eurocan Global Inc., Canada. It was realized by creative director T. Madolev of Bulgaria and producer D. Dimithroff of Canada. The film was selected and scheduled to show in the 2008 Toronto European Film Festival. But before the EU Festival’s opening, the movie was taken off the program. This 15 minute Bulgarian-Canadian co-production (actually a ciphered, beautiful and tender message to the young ones) clearly scared Bulgarian politicians and they asked the Board of the EU Festival to reject the film scheduled to show on November 19, 2008. The Board is composed mainly by not, people of the arts, but politicians of all European countries represented in Toronto. France’s presiding over the Board legitimizes the censorship of their colleagues from the ex-communists countries… Some people create art and add to culture. Other people think they are making history. What kind of history will we leave for the future?
